About this package

Shell kernel

The Shell product specification describes the operating surface, Omega execution and lessons, architecture, design patterns and a separately labelled addendum of unbuilt ideas.

The authenticated shell renders installed applications in Start and on Home. ShellViewerFacts follows the home's inference catalog and profile events, and reads platform operator standing from the profile service.

The profile watcher subscribes to the home-scoped system.profile.$events before reading profile.get from the session's platform service root. It rereads on profile.changed and reconnection, coalesces changes during pending reads, and discards replies after disposal. Only a profile matching the session principal updates display fields. The credential/session snapshot remains unchanged.

Developer mode and display names saved in Settings update Start, the home greeting, the signed-in identity line, and the developer-control CSS property together.

Run pnpm test, pnpm type-check, and pnpm build in this package.

After Settings confirms a self-deletion, its composed matrix-account-deleted DOM event makes the outer shell follow its existing Sign out link. Both shell variants handle it; embedded shells defer to their parent, and disposal removes the listener. This is a local browser event, not a new bus operation or credential grant.

Shared appearance

The shell installs the light/dark theme owned by @open-matrix/hivecast-brand. Application shadow trees inherit its --mx-* tokens. Start, application headers and taskbar use the same icon vocabulary; task widths use the shared task tokens and task buttons expose the full application name in their title. Start never shrinks; task buttons share the remaining row and excess tasks move into a +N menu. The desktop keeps its stable bottom row without adding a shell top bar.

Group apps and talk to them

In the main desktop, hold Ctrl (Cmd on macOS) and click taskbar entries to tile their apps together. Release the key to keep the group above the taskbar. The chat bar covers every tiled app. Picking a region inside one tile narrows that app's contribution while keeping the other tiles in the same question; typing in the bar preserves that scope. The bar's label and shell.tiling.describe use the same scope rules as the outgoing agent snapshot.

Quick Open

The search button beside Start and Ctrl+Space (when delivered by the browser) open Quick Open in the current workspace. Search application names/descriptions, use arrows and Enter to select, and Escape or Close to return to the previous field with its draft intact. The same catalogue, audience rules, availability and activation owner serve Start and Quick Open; warm apps are focused rather than instantiated again. OS-reserved shortcuts remain with the OS.

Omega exposes (quick-open "query"), (launcher), (choose-app key) and (close-launcher). (help "quick-open") explains the entry point. Result keys identify the exact installation and optional workspace; do not retain a list position as an identity. The actor operations are shell.launcher.open, inspect, select and close under the same prefix. The canonical S29 lesson is in Demos and the browser journey runs that exact source. The shared control also serves Classic and Zoom. An admitted host document delegates unhandled modified keys as matrix-host-shortcut intents; its nearest Shell consumes Ctrl+Space. Typing, composition and shortcuts consumed inside the document stay there. Escape restores the focused field inside an admitted frame too.

Give an app the screen

Controls chooses when this desktop's controls appear: Always visible (the default), Hide when idle, or On demand. Tools brings them back; Ctrl+Shift+Space reveals them when delivered by the browser. Quick Open also reveals controls. Hiding Start leaves both entry points available.

An editor with focus, an open Shell menu or a pending decision keeps idle controls visible. Explicit Hide controls keeps the draft and returns focus to Tools. The execution dock is outside the controls being hidden, so the same program can keep teaching or running while its application has the screen. Each desktop session retains its control preferences through the existing Shell session owner; visibility itself belongs to the current occurrence.

Omega exposes (controls), (controls-mode "summon-only" #t), (show-controls) and (hide-controls). The boolean chooses whether Start is visible. (help "controls-mode") describes the modes; Demos S31 is a copyable lesson that restores the previous preferences on completion or Stop. Actor clients use shell.chrome.inspect, configure, reveal and hide.

Application tabs use the optional shared Explorer view with an occurrence-scoped host. Installed app frames borrow their containing page's resolved host session; Zoom Shell creates its own local workspace under the tab's composition pin. Inner navigation and rollback keep their state local instead of changing the outer browser URL. Disposing that tab closes its exact child occurrence, leaving its parent and sibling views in place. The shared component host still owns verified bytes and component lifetime.

The complete S34 Lisp lesson and shell-portable-experiences.journey.spec.ts exercise a desktop inside a Stream card. This is new-workspace construction, not arbitrary live desktop migration or private-state snapshotting.

Quick Open offers Open on its own for an available selected app. It opens /shell/?surface=application&application=<name> in another page, preserving an exact installation and selected declared workspace in its address. The generic ApplicationPageElement uses the same catalogue, declared views, component loader and scoped Application-view host. Its entry loads independently of the desktop component; no hidden desktop or durable Shell session is created.

The page's application selector switches the one hosted view; its X asks that view before closing. An exact repeat selection reuses the live view. A separate page/placement creates its own view over the same admitted source actor. Reload reopens the addressed installed entry. Private application drafts are retained while their supported view remains alive; an address is not a snapshot of them. The application binding uses that page/context's own application state scope. The caller, source authority and generation still come from the admitted host.

The root is an ordinary actor with application-page/v1: describe, open (applicationName or exact catalogue key) and close. describe exposes the actual application, logical installed subject, local context and available entries. Its receiver and bindingId identify the actual running UI occurrence for ordinary actor operations; the installed subject remains the source identity. Changes emit application-page.changed. Applications inside the page use their ordinary protocols, including Stream's stream/v1. A saved Lisp definition can target that view without changing its renderer or bringing a desktop into the page.

HIVECAST_STREAM_SOURCE_PREVIEW=1 HIVECAST_BASE_URL=<local-Shell-source-preview> HIVECAST_PROOF_IDENTITY_FILE=<non-founder-identity-file> pnpm --dir tests/browser-regression exec playwright test journeys/shell-application-page.journey.spec.ts journeys/shell-portable-experiences.journey.spec.ts

The source-preview Stream case selects its actual built public browser module; its collections, discovered views and installed application frames remain real. It does not claim published installation or staging delivery of the optional app.
